The Upper Peninsula
The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a land of many attractions and activities. If you visit once, you'll probably come back. Biking, fishing, and camping are popular summer activities. Skiing & snowmobiling are popular winter activities. Top attractions include visiting Upper Michigan's 84 waterfalls, the Soo Locks, Mackinac Bridge, or one of the hundreds of other attractions. During our visit we did a lot more than explore the former base. We also visited Laughing Whitefish Falls, the Soo Locks, Presque Isle Park, and several area communities.

Laughing Whitefish Falls
The 20-foot wide falls have a total height of about 100 feet made up of a vertical drop of about 15 feet at the top and then breaking into cascades over a stratified rock. There's about a one-mile scenic hike from the main road. The fall has observation decks & railing at the top, middle and bottom of the cascade. We had visited these falls in the 1960's but back then there was no observation decks or railing making the viewing much more precarious.
While visiting the Presque Isle Park we watched an iron-ore loading dock in operation nearby. The "Charles M Beeghly" was loading iron ore from the Presque Isle Harbor iron ore dock (Built in 1912). Nearby is the Presque Isle Harbor Light and 2,600-foot breakwater.

My son and I walked (more like jumped & climbed) the breakwater boulders almost all the way to the light. Click here for photo. We also tested the waters of Lake Superior.

We drove to Sault Ste. Marie to visit The Soo Locks. We ate lunch at restaurant overlooking the locks then decided to take the Soo Locks Boat Tour. It was thrilling to actually go THROUGH the locks on a ship. We went through the USA locks first then returned through the Canadian Lock. The trip lasts about 2 hours and a crewmember narrates throughout. My son however thought the trip was too long. Click here to view live web cam images from the Soo Locks.
